After surviving a terrorist massacre in the Middle East, climbing Mt. Sinai with Greek monks, hitchhiking through Europe, and crashing a car in the forests of Australia, Joel Ross had stories to tell -- and this was before he began his work for the Central Intelligence Agency, where he became enmeshed in a Latin American revolution, among other activities that cannot be revealed. He has written down his experiences -- encompassing such universal themes as love, betrayal, humor, and disappointment -- in a collection of enthralling vignettes spanning three decades PHASES OF THE MOON.

I came across this book while searching for information on the events leading up to the United States intervention in Panama, Just Cause in 1989. But this book, was so much more, yet only a taste of the author's vast experiences. If there is a phrase that would define this book, "living outside the comfort zone," comes to mind. The author leads us through periods of his life that were hurtful, hopeful, magical, spiritual, loving and comical. In several aspects, the author's life reflected my own as a boy, but I was the Catholic kid in a Los Angeles community that was half Jewish. My own parents were both abusive and anti-Semitic, but my "saviors" in the neighborhood were members of the Jewish Community. Anti-semitism, was something beyond my comprehension and that way of thinking, thankfully, was not passed to me from my parents.
I was particularly interested in the author's life on Kibbutz Nann in Israel and his travels throughout this unstable region after the War of Attrition, and just prior to the Yom Kippur War in 1973. It really took a lot of courage to do most of the things he did during that period of Middle Eastern history.
I was intrigued by the author's spiritual experiences that are uncovered throughout the book. The Age of Magic and the Death of Magic says it all. I can relate what it's like to be waiting for a spiritual "spark" to move you forward. As I read through the chapters, I wondered if there are always sparks around us and we just miss more, if not all of them as we age, or if the sparks just disappear from our lives. Personally, I'm in a place now where I could use a spark to keep my life moving, but it's not coming. After reading this book, maybe I can hold out a little longer.
I would certainly hope that the author will dig deep into his heart and soul to provide us with a complete account of his experience, on all levels, of the attack he survived at Lod International Airport (Tel Aviv, Israel) on May 30, 1972. Surviving events such as these change people to the core, even if it's not apparent. Four and a half pages does not do the event and the impact on the author justice. Maybe it would make a great short story, or an item for a textbook on terrorism or psychology. The author has the skills to share with his readers an in-depth account of this incident. Tell us!
I've never experienced anything like the Lod attack, but I've experienced first-hand what it does to people. My ex-wife and I were flying from David, in Panama to the Paitilla Airport, located in Panama City. When we arrived there were crowds of people at the terminal. We learned that an Alas Chiricanas flight from France Field (Colon) to Paitilla had gone down. There were no survivors. The investigation found that the aircraft had been bombed, possibly by Hezbollah, and was targeted because it carried mostly Jewish businessmen returning from the Colon Free Zone. Less than 24 hours later the Jewish community center in Bueno Aires, Argentina was also bombed. I'll never forget the faces of those people at the terminal awaiting word on their loved ones. Senseless.
A Jew in Australia... That's the subject of stand-up comedy! Here, I'm not going to be a spoiler, but this part of the book is absolutely hilarious. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I'll never look at beer from Down Under the same way again!
One important message I came away with after reading this book, intended or unintended, is that all of us are more the same, than we are different. If we can only stretch our horizons and live outside our comfort zone, magic will happen. Many people, myself included, can't seem to do it, or lost the ability somewhere along the way. L'Chaim!

Phases of the Moon Joel Ross 9780557142408 Books Reviews
PHASES OF THE MOON, by Joel Ross (he was CIA so that may not be his real name) is the story of a young man's spiritual odyssey against a background of real-life intrigue. Ross is a romantic at heart but very practical in achieving his goals.
I have read many "coming of age" tomes but this one is special because the author is so unpretentious, so likable, and so intelligent that one can easily identify with his travails and cheer for his successes.
Thanks for your service, Joel Ross, but thanks even more for providing insight into your life via a page-turner of the highest quality. Will certainly buy the next one.
